How to build and implement a strong UX strategy that benefits you, and your client
The concept of a User Experience (UX) strategy derives from how to design, maintain, and improve the overall user experience of a product or service.

The concept of a User Experience (UX) strategy derives from how to design, maintain, and improve the overall user experience of a product or service. It outlines the goals, objectives, research, design, and development methods that will be used to achieve those goals. In 2023, a productive and effective UX strategy will be more critical than ever as users worldwide base their decisions and loyalty on who can provide the best user interactions and experiences.
Simply put, UX can be any user interaction with your product or service. UX experiences rely heavily on ensuring you understand your users, their needs, habits, preferences, and even their limitations. While the concept has existed for generations, it was in the 1990s that the term began to pick up speed. Donald Norman was named a User Experience Architect at Apple, effectively the first person ever to have ‘user experience’ in their job function and an indicator that the future was arriving.
In the early 2000s, Peter Morville created the ‘UX Honeycomb’. In this framework, Morville lists seven objectives that any UX design, service, or product should be made up of and that they should be:
- Useful
- Usable
- Desirable
- Findable
- Accessible
- Credible
- Valuable
In any UX scenario, your main priority is to fulfil your user’s needs. Additionally, you want your users to have a positive experience with your product or service to keep them loyal to your brand. While there are many ways you can determine what an effective UX strategy should comprise of, some of the main ones that any business, team, or organisation should always consider are: allocating the proper resources and budget towards a UX strategy; the importance of research in implementing a practical UX approach, and the role testing plays when building and fulfilling a UX strategy.
Importance of research in implementing an effective UX strategy
When implementing an effective UX strategy, research plays a vital role in ensuring that the final product or service meets the needs of its intended users. There are several fundamental ways in which research can contribute to a successful UX strategy:
- Understanding user needs and goals: By researching past, current, and future users, designers, and developers can gain a profound understanding of the user as a whole. This understanding can inform the design and development of a product or service, ensuring that it meets the users’ needs and provides a seamless and satisfying experience.
- Identifying pain points and problems: Research helps uncover potential problems with a product or service. Addressing these issues early in the design process can prevent them from negatively impacting the user experience when you deploy your product or service.
- Measuring the success of a UX strategy: Research can also be used to measure the success of a UX strategy post-implementation. By conducting usability testing, user surveys, and other forms of research, designers and developers can gather data on how well the product or service meets the users’ needs and identify areas that may need improvement so that the product or service can be improved or changed.
Following through on conducting the proper research can be the difference between a satisfied and dissatisfied user. Therefore, investing in research is of paramount importance, which brings us to the next objective to consider:
Setting up appropriate budgets and resource allocation
It’s one thing to do adequate research. It’s another to effectively follow through with it. Ensuring you appropriate a sufficient budget for your overall UX strategy is paramount. As doing so can improve your success rate of user satisfaction. Proper resource allocation and budgeting help ensure that a UX strategy is appropriately executed and leads to a better user experience. In addition, a well-budgeted approach can increase customer satisfaction and loyalty, leading to increased revenue and a higher return on investment.
Adequate resources and budget enable companies to continuously refine and improve their UX strategy, ensuring you can stay ahead of the competition. In addition, a positive user experience can positively impact how your users perceive your brand, leading to increased brand recognition and customer loyalty.
Establishing a set percentage of your development budget towards the UX process can streamline and organise your company’s plans and strategies. While your numbers and the budget can fluctuate, the point is to have a solid foundation to establish your UX projects and what budgets they can be based on. One area of your budget that you should allocate a good chunk of your budget is testing.
Testing, testing, testing!
Testing is one of the most critical facets of a UX strategy. It helps identify and fix usability issues before deployment, resulting in a better organisational flow and better end service. User testing is also a crucial aspect of user-centred design and helps ensure that the UX strategy is designed with the needs and preferences of the user in mind.
Finding and fixing issues through proper testing can save time and money compared to fixing problems after deployment. In many cases, if testing is not executed correctly, it can set you back so much and force you to end up at square one. Productive testing (and several rounds of it) can prevent that from happening. Testing can also provide valuable feedback that can be used to iterate and improve the UX strategy.
Emphasizing the importance of testing can save you a lot of unnecessary complications down the road. The more productive testing you conduct, the closer you deploy a positive user experience.
