Understanding the ever-evolving streaming environment

Throughout the 21st century, streaming has taken the world by storm. Viewers now have the freedom to enjoy their favourite movies and shows whenever they please, without the constraints of traditional television schedules and channel limitations. The impact of streaming has been significant, offering viewers a vast array of choices beyond what broadcast television can offer. With so many streaming platforms out there, entertainment has become more accessible than ever before.

Yet as streaming technology continues to innovate and adapt, what elements and solutions do all media and entertainment companies need to consider to keep up with consumer demands, and what elements are already making waves?

The shift to personalised viewing

Considering the ever-evolving developments and trends within the media and entertainment industry, it has been fascinating to watch the shift from the days when households gathered around a single TV with limited channels and fixed schedules, to completely personalised viewing experiences with so many options to choose from. In this day and age, personal preferences dominate, with each person wanting to curate their own viewing experience. Streaming services have adapted to this by tailoring their algorithms to understand and respond to consumer behaviour and preferences.

The exceptional aspect of streaming is its unique capability for personalisation. Advanced algorithms can cater recommendations to match users’ preferences and tap into the intricacies of the psychology behind the user. This level of customisation ensures that everyone can enjoy the content that resonates with them, which transforms the viewing experience into something entertaining but also deeply personal to the viewer.

Why viewer experience matters

Ensuring viewers have an enjoyable experience is of paramount importance in the 21st century. That is why an easy-to-use navigation system and affordable pricing models are crucial factors for many viewers. For example, a recent study by Convia revealed that users who encounter buffering are three times more likely to abandon a video. Indicating that streaming platforms and media companies must do everything in their power to provide the best services and offerings to stay ahead of the game and the competition. Proper investments into the best software and solutions are one of the most important things to consider.

Rising costs and changing distribution

However, as more streaming services emerge and costs accumulate, the landscape of entertainment distribution is changing. This shift impacts how shows and movies are produced, shared, and consumed, which ultimately affects the revenue streams of studios and networks. With the increase in streaming’s popularity, subscription fees are also on the rise, potentially making it more difficult for users to manage the cost.

Companies such as Netflix and Disney+ have become household names and have captured audiences worldwide with their extensive content offerings. As they continue to dominate the conversation, they have also been making headlines for raising their prices and tightening their policies on password sharing among users.

Amidst these developments, a recent survey conducted by NPR/Iposos shared what truly matters to consumers when selecting a streaming service. According to their findings, viewers prioritise three key factors: cost, content variety and ease of use. In response to the price increases by popular platforms, many viewers are now exploring alternative services that offer ad-supported options, providing a more budget-friendly streaming experience. This growing landscape has made other major services in the streaming industry adapt their strategies to align with changing consumer preferences.

The rise of AVOD models

This ties into AVOD (Advertising-based video-on-demand) models, where companies are now exploring monetization strategies that offer free, or cheaper access to content while generating revenue through advertisements. AVOD companies are prepared for the future as a recent study by National Public Radio revealed that 70% of people want the choice to decide whether they see ads while streaming. Furthermore, nearly half of respondents stated they would be fine with watching ads if that meant their subscription fees were cheaper. As AVOD has become increasingly popular, streaming platforms like Netflix are recognizing that some customers may find their services unaffordable.

The role of AI in streaming

Streaming platforms are undergoing a large evolution in content delivery and viewer experience, especially with the support of artificial intelligence (AI). The integration of AI into streaming technology is crucial for multiple reasons. Firstly, AI is versatile, and one crucial component of this is content optimization. For example, Amazon Prime Video uses content optimization by closely analysing viewer preferences within shows, thereby influencing future production, and editing decisions. Furthermore, AI plays a pivotal role in ensuring a seamless streaming experience. Platforms such as YouTube do this by dynamically adjusting streaming quality in real-time based on the viewers’ internet speed and ensuring uninterrupted entertainment. AI emerges as a vital factor in enhancing both the content and delivery process of a streaming service, demonstrating why it’s advantageous to use AI ethically to stay competitive in the industry.

Electronic Programme Guides gaining traction

In today’s media landscape, where consumers increasingly seek the freedom to choose their own preferred viewing experiences, Electronic Programme Guides (EPG) are gaining traction as well. EPGs are a menu-based guide that provides users with detailed and interactive programming systems for their favourite channels and content. This not only makes it easier to find shows without the hassle of manual channel flipping, but for broadcasters, EPGs help retain audience engagement by providing viewers with a clear guide on when content of interest will be aired.
